Marennes is the capital of oysters, a recognized component of French gastronomy. And of course this place has the best sushi delivery in the region. The town has a controlling interest in their national catch – just over 50%.
At the special oyster museum in Fort Louvois, you can learn that oysters are extremely capricious creatures, that the quality of the product depends on many factors (temperature, salinity of water, etc.), that the larvae are born three times a year and mature in about two years and finally that the ready-made oysters are harvested on special flatboats with wheels. There is also a long bridge to the island of Oleron.
