Banff National Park is a national park established in 1895. The site, covering over 6,600 square kilometers, is located in Canada and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.

Location on the map and history of creation

The complex is located in the province of Alberta west of Calgary in the Rocky Mountain region and was formed to protect and preserve the natural landscape, hot springs, relic areas, and biodiversity. The reserve was also founded to develop tourism and recreational infrastructure. According to statistics, about 4 million people visit the facility each year.

It used to be a place where Indians and other locals used to gather, hunt, and fish. In 1783 the traveler A. Mackenzie (a Scotsman) crossed the Rocky Mountains and recorded in his descriptions the features of nature, fauna, etc.

After the construction of the (transatlantic) railroad, the area became popular with tourists from Canada and other countries. The first hotel (Fairmont Banff Springs) was erected in 1888. Subsequently, the resort town was rebuilt and by 2022 there were more than 50 hotels.

The boundaries of the park were revised several times by government agencies and were finally approved by 1949. To the anniversary of the reserve (125th anniversary) in 2010 there was laid a hiking trail length of 26 km. Roller skates and bicycles are allowed on the track.

How to get to Banff

Tourists from other countries can reach the national park via Calgary International Airport.

From the locality is required to follow:

  1. On Greyhound or Brewster buses. Flights depart regularly from Calgary and other cities in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
  2. By car on Highway 1 from Calgary, Highway 93 from Cranbuck, Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer on Highway 11.

Opening hours and ticket prices

A 1-day admission ticket costs $9.80 for adults (ages 18-64) and $8.30 for seniors (ages 65 and older). Visiting protected areas for children (under 18 years) is free. Tickets can be purchased online. In addition is required to pay the cost of hotel rooms, some routes, sports and tourist equipment.

The timing of visits to individual sites (lakes, rocks) is regulated by an internal schedule.

Lake Moraine

Glacial Lake Moraine is surrounded by mountains and forests. The reservoir is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks at a level of 1,885 m. The lake reaches its maximum fill in June. Water in summer takes on a bright turquoise hue. The picturesque lake is surrounded by 10 peaks over 3,000 m and the Wenchemna Glacier. Nearby there is a 1.5 km long walking trail.

Lake Peyto

Peyto glacial lake is at 1,860 m and is unusually shaped like a dog or wolf’s head. The body of water is named after the discoverer Bill Peyto. The water in the lake is a rich turquoise color.

Lake Louise

Cave and Pool National Historic Site
